Movement Disorders

1. What It Is

Movement Disorders are neurological conditions that affect how the body starts, controls, or coordinates movements. These disorders may cause movements to become slower, faster, stiff, shaky, or completely involuntary. They can disrupt everyday activities like walking, writing, or maintaining posture. The severity varies from person to person, and symptoms may develop gradually or suddenly depending on the type of disorder.

2. Causes

Movement Disorders can arise due to several overlapping factors:

Biological: Damage or dysfunction in brain regions that control movement, particularly the basal ganglia and cerebellum.

Genetic: Certain inherited conditions or gene variations may increase the likelihood of developing specific movement disorders.

Environmental: Exposure to toxins, side effects of certain medications, infections, metabolic issues, or previous head injury.

In many cases, the cause involves a combination of biological, genetic, and environmental influences.

3. Signs & Symptoms

Motor Symptoms: Tremors or shaking, slowed or reduced movement, involuntary jerks, muscle stiffness, abnormal postures, and difficulty with balance or coordination.

Non-Motor Symptoms: Fatigue, sleep disturbances, anxiety or mood changes, difficulty concentrating, and reduced facial expression.
