Parkinson's Disease
1. What It Is
Parkinson’s Disease is a neurological condition where the brain gradually loses dopamine, a chemical needed for smooth movement and coordination. As dopamine decreases, activities like walking, writing, and balance become harder. It develops slowly, and early symptoms may be mild.
2. Causes
Parkinson’s can occur due to a mix of factors:
Biological: Loss of dopamine-producing brain cells and abnormal protein deposits.
Genetic: Certain gene changes may increase risk, though not always inherited.
Environmental: Exposure to toxins or a history of head injury.
Most cases are caused by combined, not single, factors.
3. Signs & Symptoms
Motor Symptoms: Tremors, slow movement, muscle stiffness, balance issues, and reduced facial expression.
Non-Motor Symptoms: Sleep problems, loss of smell, fatigue, mood changes, memory difficulty, and constipation.
